Booklist Review of Ancients

From
Booklist

Golemon’s third novel in the Event Group series proves to be his best yet. The Event Group is a secret military organization that specializes in the retrieval and study of ancient technology. The premise this time is elaborate: more than 10,000 years ago, the citizens of Atlantis developed a weapon so powerful that it destroyed their civilization and led to the story of Noah’s flood. The device they used is now in the hands of a society that traces their lineage back to the dynasty of Caesar. Colonel Jack Collins and his team must stop the group from using the superweapon and unleashing massive devastation. The resulting tale is a mix of the James Rollins action-heavy adventure, the military gadgetry of Tom Clancy, the pacing of the television series 24, and the conspiracy theories devoured by fans of the radio show Coast to Coast AM. For no-frills adventure fans with a taste for over-the-top plots. --Jeff Ayers --This text refers to the
Hardcover edition.

I am enjoying 'Ancients' and have about 50 pages to go. However, I'm curious. Does the hardback have as many errors in grammar as my paperback. These are not just basic errors, but are glaringly obvious--to the point they are distracting from the tale. I read a lot and have never seen such carelessness--hardly a page is without them--I could do a better job editing than whoever did this book. Just thought you ought to know--as it is detrimental to both you and the publisher's reputation(s).

      Dear Mr. Moser--

The glaring errors in the paperback and the hardcover are the fault of St. Martin's Press. The copy edited version never made it to the printer. The edited copy was filed away and was forgotten by a 'former' editor at the firm. Believe me, this edited copy has cost me many sleepless nights, so much so that St. Martin's has placed four copy editors at my disposal for the release of Leviathan, as well as myself going through the copy witha fine tooth comb.

To all my readers out there, you have my sincerest apologies for this very disturbing event. This will never happen again.

I also have to say the the editing errors didn't bother me in the least. This was a great and fun story and to tell the truth, I've read several other books that had actual TERRIBLE editing problems. This, in comparison, was nothing.

I've also, read a couple of folks complaints wondering where the monsters were in this story, and as far as I was concerned, the people were the monsters!! The monsters in your stories have had a reason to be 'montsters'..............the people didn't, they had a choice, which made it all the more frightening. 'Ancient's is my 2nd favorite, so far, of the series, behind 'Event'.

Thank you for your comment and commitment to the Event Group series. And, you are absolutely right---although the novel Ancients didn't have the traditional monster in it, it did have the real life equivalent in the sinister group of evil people from the family Juliai. It all depends on your own interpretation of 'monster.

          Thanks again,

I was going to send you the list of all the errors that I found from that point forward (five pages worth) so that corrections could be made for HOPEFULLY future publishings. This was incredibly distracting and I am sorry to you for your loss of sleep over this issue. I have recommended your books to so many people that I had to suggest strongly that they don't read The Ancients as it would leave them with an unfavorable perception of your books. I loved Event and Legend.

      Dear Marsha---

Thank you for reading my Event Group novels, it's people like you that i write them for. As for Jack? as I always say, sometimes life really sucks and good people go away before their time. That being said, I have intentionally brought along the characters in the Event Group slowly, so readers can get to know them as they would a real life person and people. To do this, I have taken much flack from reviewers and readers about how the characters are hard to get to know. Now, by the fourth novel, people are starting to realize that they have come to know each of the characters on a more intimate level, step by step, adventure by adventure. Does anyone really know Colonel Jack Collins? Yes, and no. But the one thing everyone should have realized up to this point is that Jack is a man that was (or is) a deep natured man, a warrior that was born, and not made. A survivor.

I hope this helps out, and thanks again for reading the files of the Event group, and yes, there are so many more to come, you'll be reading for many, many years, but keep in mind, sometimes good people die, and right doesn't always win in the end (not if the Event group can help it, anyway)

      Sincerely,

I just wanted to let you know how much I love your books. They are an inspiration to this aspiring author. I love how you flawlessly blend characterization, plot, and action, all the things that I think make the perfect story. In preparation for your next novel, I'm just started rereading your first three!

I just want to add that I'm very happy with the little hints you've been dropping about the fate of a certain character. I hate main character death more than anything and if there's one thing that turns me off from an author, it's the excessive killing of characters. So far, you haven't let me down. So I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the trend continues!

In closing, I can't wait for "Leviathan"! (I just caught the mention of the ship at the beginning of "Event." Clever tie-in!) I've already started saving up for it!

Your note was one of the more interesting letter I've had in a while. I am so appreciative of you reading EVENT, LEGEND and ANCIENTS just in preparation for reading Leviathan, I am promoting you to fan of the month. I really think you will love LEVIATHAN as I put heart and soul into the writing of it.

As for character assassinations (little joke) I am very careful of the fact that my characters have taken time to grow on people, if they do happen to die in the line of duty, I want it meaningful, almost to the point of hurting the reader, almost as much as actually losing someone. That's the reason it happens in only rare circumstances. But never feel comfortable, because even though I write far out adventures, I try to keep the tension as real life as I can.

Again Julie, thank you for reading the Event group adventures!

Like yourself, a lot of people were disappointed at the demise of Jack Collins, as was myself, sometimes a writer has to go with the flow of a story and is not sure at all times how things will turn out. Rest assured, Captain Carl Everett has learned from Jack, and the good work should continue for Department 5656.

Thank you for writing, as a writer I have many effluences that shaped my way, of course one of the biggest is Clive Cussler (his earlier work) and Larry Bond. I kind of fuse the two styles together, as with Cussler there is the fantastical and adventure driven style, and with Larry Bond (formidable comparison to Tom Clancy in my opinion) you have the military, but driven story lines.

As for the Sony Video recorder, you never know what vaults will show up in future books, out of several thousand vaults and three quarters of a million Event Files, you're bound to see some familiar material. Time travel is always an interesting scenario, but if done wrong and not explained as scientifically as humanly possible without throwing the reader into an Einstein sized headache, the novel is usually one you read and forget. A future novel, DIMENSIONS will deal with Mr. Einstein's theory at a base level and should be very much fun for the reader.

Again, thank you very much for the kind letter Brad.

Thank you for your note. As you stated, there are many towns in and around the Superstition Mountains. These towns are very spread out, and while you would think that any large crash may be observed by townspeople of these small gatherings (fictitious or not) there have been many airplane crashes, before and after the war that went unnoticed and undiscovered after many days and even months.

As for using real television station call signs and logos, in Event I had to use different call signs for the local Phoenix stations. As you may notice in some of my other works, I use real names such as CNN, NBC and the other major networks, not only did the mother organizations give their permission for their use, I also had the right under what is called the Fair Usage Act. That means unless I demean or disparage their name, they can be used in brief mention.

I hope answered you concern, and if not, please follow my lead and do some research on the remoteness of some areas of the Superstition's. The actual number of military aircraft that has crashed there is staggering.

      Dear Dillis---

Thank you for writing. You are absolutely right about the launch capabilities of the USS Lake Champlain. As part of the newer Ticonderoga Class Cruisers, the Champlain, is as you say, equipped with the newer vertical launch systems as you described. During the research phase for ANCIENTS, the Champlain was in dry dock for upgrades and modifications on the defensive and offensive weapons systems. At that time there was conjecture and rumor in the yard that the cruiser may see a return of the magazine fed launch system of the older models, albeit on the stern rather than forward areas of the ship, as an add on, and not a replacement system. The Harpoon system currently deployed is an offensive strike capability apparatus as you know, and with the removal of the old reliable system from Raytheon, it was felt more defensive power should be added to the vertical defensive system.

Alas, my guess that the Navy would follow through with the rumors (can you believe it, navy scuttlebutt was wrong?) was indeed wrong. While the older system was far more easily described and made for a better action scene in ANCIENTS, it was a wrong picture to paint and not accurate. By the time I found out about the non change-over, it was too late as the book had gone to print. I hope this glitch in my research won't deter you and the obviously intelligent fans of my work from keeping the faith with the Event Group!

I hadn't heard about the rumors of returning to the old system, so I'm very glad I asked. Anticipating the future can be as dangerous as following scuttlebutt, which is how we "got" Tom Clancy's Beretta 10mm. I guess that puts you in quite good company, if you don't mind the comparison.

As a military tech/firearms "nut", I'm used to minor glitches (and the occasional major one). If not, I would never read most any fiction or half of the non-fiction I have. So rest assured, I am eagerly awaiting the next in the very long series of your novels that I hope are to come.

If you have read the previous Event Group novel's, which i assume you have since you state you were invested in the characters, would Jack Collins, knowing Sarah was more than likely dead, be the sort to allow the man who in the long run was responsible for killing Sara, escape justice, even if that would end up costing him his life? It doesn't sound like the Colonel would have allowed that to happen does it? Rest assured, Jack's replacement would do the same thing...but we'll have to wait for Leviathan for that answer, and all does get answered in LEVIATHAN.

I want to thank you for investing in the adventures of the Event Group, but always keep in mind, and I am loathe to say this, bad things happen to good people in real life, while the Event Group is a fictional (?) agency of the federal government, I do like to keep as real life as possible when it comes to losing good men and women. And believe me one of the hardest decisions of my life was killing Lisa in the very first Event Group novel, EVENT.

I looked forward to reading Ancients, but, something made me look to the back of the book and to my shock I saw that Jack was killed. Lickity split. Just like that, at the end! UGH!! He was my favorite character! So, in a fit, I looked up the next book, coming out next month, hoping to find a 'hint' that Jack was saved or alive, found nothing and then, now I'm here! I'm not liking what I'm finding out, so, unfortunately, I'm going to hold off reading Ancients and Leviathan, unless or until I find out Jack is alive. To start, thank you for taking a chance and buying the Event Group novels, it puts a smile on this rather mundane countenance of mine to hear such news. Also, as far as order goes, always start with EVENT, as this novel introduces the main characters of the storyline and gives you valuable background information on Department 5656.

research has always been a passion of mine, and is very necessary when dealing with a storyline that always starts out with an historical prologue. A writer can alter certain aspects of the history when it comes to a characterization of an Event, but never the documented accounts of the base story. So, when you use an historical backdrop to a story, get the facts straight, it makes for a more plausible and fun experience. And finally, the order of battle is this---EVENT, LEGEND, ANCIENTS and then in August, LEVIATHAN...that will have to do until PRIMEVAL next spring!

      Again, thank you for writing.

As of now, I am reading LEGEND and I also have EVENT. I'm looking forward to reading LEVIATHIAN, but at the same time kind of reluctant. Who will replace Jack?
I have also taken a liking to Carl Everett and Will Mendenhall. To me, Will is sort of an underdog and I hope you keep him on for a long time.
Please continue to write more books on the EVENT GROUP and I will look forward to reading them.

    All the best

    Mr Golemon,

I just wanted to let you know about something strange that I just noticed today while finishing up Ancients. By the way, I have also read and very much enjoyed Event and Legend.

So, while searching on Barnes & Noble's website for you and your books I noticed that it is ver difficult to find your books. If you do a search on your name only the book Event shows up. If you search on your last name only the book Event shows up. If you search for Legend (and type only the word legend into the search box) your book comes up as the 77th item in the list. If you search for Ancients it shows up 78th in the list.

To me that means no one is going to find your books right now on BN.com.

I hope there is someone you can speak to to get this situation remedied soon.

Best of luck, and keep 'em coming.

    Peter

Thank you for your note on the process at Barnes & Noble. I have pointed out this problem to my publisher and am now happy to report that the flaw in the system has been repaired---anyone looking for the Event Group books at that particular site will no longer  have a problem finding Jack and the rest.

      Sincerely--

I'm currently reading "Ancients" and have a comment/question concerning Part One/Chapter Two (page 56). You refer to 'Addis Abba'. When I was assigned to 14th US Army Field Station Asmara, Eritrea (now its own country but then a province of Ethiopia), it was 'Addis Ababa', not 'Abba', and was the capital of Ethiopia.

      Dear Mr. Austing--

You are absolutely correct in your correction of Adis Ababa. However, I used the Muslim pronunciation of the city instead of the English translation, which my publisher failed to replace. When I do my research I always place the names of cities, towns, and countries in their original form and not in the English translation---it is all my fault and I will endeavor to place all names and places in the English translation.

Thank you for writing and I hope my fauxpau has not deterred you from enjoying my other Event Group stories.

I've bought your first 3 books (Event, Legend and Ancients) at once two days ago. Currently reading Event and so far I have not regretted getting them regardless of the fluke editing that I read stated in this blog forum for Ancients (I have'nt gotten to that point, yet), but that does'nt matter (for me, anyways). I'm definately hooked on the story line premiss and the entertainment of your book(s) and I'm sure I will not be disappointed as I continue reading this series, and other books that you may produce. All my thanks, Rod

I picked up Event about a year ago and was immediately hooked. Since then I've read Legend and Ancients, and will pick up Leviathan today. Okay - I was very disappointed with what happened to Jack Collins. But read your blog about him and get it. I was a lifelong Clive Cussler fan until a few years ago. I just got tired of Dirk Pitt's ego - no one man is that good. What I really love about the Event Series is that you have an entire team of heroes, not just the muscle and grit, but also the brainiacs. Sure, Jack Collins was the best, but he's not a one man show. Keep up the great writing!

Thank you for your letter, and rest assured the arrogance of characters like Dirk Pitt (although I love that guy) will never be allowed to permeate the adventures of the Event Group as there will always be checks and balances by my characters to keep in check the arrogance of the hero's. Can you imagine the scientific arm of Department 5656 allowing the field men to take advantage of them? Director Niles Compton doesn't want individuals, he wants results and that comes with the entire group thinking as one.

Thank you for your praise of Leviathan. And believe me sir, this blog and comment section is never a bother, I absolutely love hearing from anyone who wants to comment on the adventures of the Event Group...you can say i live for it and appreciate anything my readers have to say!

As for the next novel, 'PRIMEVAL' will be out in the summer of 2010 and will be one of those adventures that will cause a stir as it delves into the greatest North American legend of all time.

"Primeval", yummy. I can't wait for it come come out and if the legend you are referring to is what i think it is, this might eclipse Ancients as my favorite in the series. To see my favorite legend come to life on the written page will be awesome. I guess i am not supposed to name it but i will say i think it has something to do with a version of a legend as once presented in the tv show The Six Million Dollar Man LOL!!!!!

On another note, I wanted to say thank you for making yourself so accessible to the fans and for commenting on everything people have to say. I find it refreshing and hope it stays that way for as long as you thrill us with your wonderful stories. I'm a struggling writer myself and reading your work is certainly an inspiration to me. Thank you!!!!!

I just finished Ancients, and I must admit that I am saddened by the loss of Jack Collins. I am hopeful that he is "brought back from the dead" in Leviathan...

Regarding Event - is there any possibility of another novel with the actual alien invasion?

By the way, I have thoroughly enjoyed Event, Legend and Ancients, and look forward to Leviathan!

Thank you for writing. Believe me I have not left out the Battelle Corporation. I don't use them in my notes for the simple reason that I have worked with them in the past, and that's all there is to say about that if you get the drift here. Anyway, thanks for the letter and the support!

Primeval will be here before you know, and to let you in on a small secret, I'm am close to finishing the larges of the Event Group novels; LEGACY. So we here at Department 5656 are still on the job and the files will once more be flowing through to the public, hang in there!

You make us care about the characters and then you kill off Collins just when we think things will start to heat up between him and Sarah. I hope you caught up and I find myself no longer in trouble with a valued reader. Leviathan should have answred all of your concerns as far as Jack Collins and Sarah were concerened. But to be honest, they get into just as much trouble as they did in Ancients in the follow up stories, so hang in there and never, ever, panic, as that would be Jcak or Sarah's way!

    Mr. Golemon,

I haven't yet had the pleasure of reading one of your books but had a friend recently point me in your direction. After taking a look at your books I would love to read them.

I read a lot and have had a Sony e-reader since for a couple years and use it exclusively for the moment. Is there any chance you'll publish your books in EPUB or another digital format? I will happily be the first of many customers.

    Thanks,

Thank you for your note. As we speak, things are being negotiated that will eventually bring all of the Event Group adventures to a digital format near you. Things have gone slow sice the recent unpleasantness between Amazon.com, Apple Inc. and Macmillan Publishing, of which I am a part of. It has been settled and now all we are waiting on are the appropriate numbers to be negotiated.

So hang in there and it will be soon, I promise. Until then, you can help spread the word and help save the book format as it was always meant to be. Some digital is good, but books are great.

Aloha David : I fell in love with the Event book and had to buy Legend & the very best, so far, Ancients. Ancients is just about the best book i've ever read and as for the printng mistakes, they never bothered me, those clowns are just knit picking. The Event Group team was very easy to like and how Jack & Everett took care of business, well lets just say...it reminds me a little of Dirk Pitt. Now, in Ancients, Jack...did you really, would be cool if he popped up alive sunning on some beach in Spain...but i guess heroes don't make it home all the time. I plan on reading Leviathan and every book you write. Maybe i'll find another hero to cheer for. Thank you for opening up a whole new world of adventure. with much Aloha.....David.
p.s. Jack should have shot Dahlia on Ford Island...i read that part while on the bus, going to work, passing Pearl Harbor...that was to cool....Mahalo Brah...
